The Viral Demon is a found footage horror of a new type that breaks the fourth wall and has characters directly address the audience. It is also a microbudget feature and will be screening this Friday, November 11 at the NYC Horror Film Fest. You can get more details here: http://nychorrorfest.com/movies/the-viral-demon/
First off, tell me more about the Viral Demon and where the idea came from.
THE VIRAL DEMON recording is a wakeup call to understand the truth of what’s happening to our world ever since the Viral Demon was released from its prison. It follows the first night of demonic possession as it turns a group of friends against each other. As growing numbers of people get possessed, knowing who to trust is the key to survival.
During the Salem witch trials, the Viral Demon was trapped by an amazing witch practitioner who sacrificed herself to save humanity. We need to join together and trap the Viral Demon again before it’s hive-minded, possessed army grows too large.
Watch to learn the truth of what really happened that infamous evening now dubbed “The Quad Murders” by the media. In THE VIRAL DEMON recording you’ll witness many who were compelled to fight for their survival, just as others succumbed to the Viral Demon. We hope you’ll be one of the fighters.
THE VIRAL DEMON is among the first of a new sub-genre that I'm calling a "web-recording" movie. The entire movie takes place in realtime via a recorded video-chat.
In addition, it’s the first found footage movie ever to address the viewer directly and actually have an explanation built into the story of why watching is so important.
THE VIRAL DEMON raises questions about technology and human connection that is so relevant to our modern society.
In addition, we boast a diverse cast with a kickass white woman and brainy black man as the leads, plus the cast has an age-range from 8 years old to 80 years old.
And why horror? A lot of no budget filmmakers go the horror film route. What pushed you in that direction?
Watching American Horror Story got me into a horror state of mind. Horror is such an amazing genre with a spectacular fan base. It doesn't matter if you have well known actors and directors. What matters is the story and execution.
Is this your first feature film? What other films have you made in the past?
Yes. This is my first feature film. I've directed countless shorts, music videos, spec commercials and I've directed stage plays and an off-broadway musical.
If you did or didn't go to film school what do you think were the pluses and minuses of that decision?
I went to NYU film school. I'll just say this, I don't think film school is necessary if you have the self-discipline to learn on your own. And as a filmmaker, you need to have self-discipline.
Back to The Viral Demon, tell me a bit about the process. How long did you work on the script? How long was the shoot and the post-production process?
I was able to write the script, cast, produce and shoot the movie in almost exactly one year. And post-production took longer than all of those other processes combined.
What was the budget, if you can say? And how did you keep costs down?
This is a micro-budget movie, but I can't reveal the specific budget. I kept costs down by convincing talented people to work way below their rate based on the quality of the screenplay.
What tips based on what worked and what didn't would you suggest for other filmmakers looking to make a feature for next to no money?
Look at the resources that are available to you and reverse engineer the story based on that.
What's next for The Viral Demon? Are there more festivals? Distribution?
Our goal for THE VIRAL DEMON is to connect with a reputable distributor to usher it into the world. And that path may include more film festivals, but it might not.
Anything else in the works? What's next for you?
I've developed the sequels to THE VIRAL DEMON. So in the ideal world, THE VIRAL DEMON performs well and that pulls the trigger on making the sequel. I also have a totally different horror project that I'd like to get off the ground as well as screenplays for a cosmic thriller, a corporate heist, and a sophisticated con movie.
Thanks a lot and keep us posted as The Viral Demon goes out into the world!
