The first challenge that microbudget feature filmmakers face is how to come up with the best story for their feature film. This isn't as straightforward as you might think!
The first thing about making a microbudget feature is that you can't just replicate a Hollywood style film. The simple reason for that is that you don't have the money to make Mission Impossible or The Fast & The Furious and if you try to, well, it will just look cheesy. On the other hand, you don't have to please investors, studio execs or distributors, which is incredibly freeing from a creative point of view.
But how do you do that? How should you approach creating a story? What does that mean for genre? And what if you're stuck for a story idea?
This is the first of a three-part series to prepare you for the Microbudget Launchpad - my screenplay bootcamp and competition to win a $5000 production investment in your film. The next training video will look at why you need a theme and a character arc (and what that means) if you want anyone to care about the great story you've come up with. And the last will show you how to create a great script structure so that your story works and your theme is fulfilled.
Taken together these three training videos will give you an excellent start to writing your microbudget-ready feature script.
This is a distillation of nearly a decade's work as a development exec and 15 years as a screenwriter and filmmaker with two microbudget features under my belt (my award-winning first feature is about to be released on Amazon and the second is wrapping up post-production and we're pushing it out to the festival circuit).
Registration for the Launchpad will open next Monday, June 19 for only five days. It will be a small cohort so that you will have a good chance of winning the production investment and, most important, we will have a chance to interact so that I can provide support as you go through the steps of the bootcamp over the four months of the program.
